SIMPSON STRONG-TIE LAB AT CAL POLY STATE UNIVERSITY

San Luis Obispo

The Simpson Strong-Tie Material Demonstration Laboratory (MDL), a design-bid-build project, is a 7,500 square foot facility with a 5,000 square foot attached working courtyard that is the heart of the Center for Construction Excellence Building.

The MDL was constructed to directly support the activities in its four adjoining major labs of the Center for Construction Excellence. It is intended to showcase as a working laboratory, current construction assemblies through design, engineering, and installation of materials in the built environment.

Originally conceived to be a pre-engineered metal building, Omni Design was able to convince Cal Poly to expand the project to better represent the creativity of the College of the School of Architecture and Environmental Design as well as the products of the primary donor. The project is one of the only Type IV (Heavy Timber) buildings on any University Campus in California. In 2011 the project won the U.S. Woodworks Wood Design “Wood Behind the Walls” Award.

Omni Design, Inc. provided complete architectural services as well as civil engineering services. The scope of work for the project included complete service through construction administration and record drawings. Additionally, Omni Design, Inc. provided agency coordination and processing with DSA Access Compliance Division.
