Nipomo has long been one of the fastest-growing communities on California's Central Coast, yet it has never had a dedicated sheriff's substation. Deputies responding to calls in Nipomo have had to travel from stations miles away — a gap in coverage that affects both response times and the community's sense of safety.

That changes with the approval of the new Nipomo Sheriff's Substation. On April 21, 2026, the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the project, authorizing a $14.4 million budget and clearing the required California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) review. Construction is set to begin in 2027, with completion targeted for 2028.

The 7,000-square-foot essential services facility will be located at the intersection of East Tefft Street and Carrillo Street in Old Towne Nipomo, on county-owned land adjacent to Adobe Plaza. In addition to operational space for the Sheriff's Department, the facility will include a community meeting room open to the public — making it both a law enforcement hub and a neighborhood resource.
