Do I Need a Survey Before Building?

If you're planning a construction project in San Luis Obispo or Northern Santa Barbara County — whether a new home, an addition, a detached structure, or a commercial building — a land survey is almost always a critical first step. In many jurisdictions, it's required. In all cases, it protects your investment.

What Happens If You Skip the Survey?

Building without a current, accurate survey is one of the most common sources of costly construction problems. Structures built too close to a property line — even by a few inches — can violate setback requirements and trigger a stop-work order or require demolition. Encroachments onto adjacent properties or easements can create legal liability. Grading done without accurate topographic data can cause drainage problems that are expensive to fix after the fact.

In San Luis Obispo County and cities like Paso Robles, Atascadero, and San Luis Obispo, the building department will typically require evidence of property boundaries and setback compliance as part of the permit process. The earlier you have survey data, the smoother your project will run.
