Project Information
Location
San Luis Obispo, CA
Client
California Polytechnic State University
The Tech Park Pilot Building is a design-build technology lab facility developed for Cal Poly and the California Central Coast Research Partnership through a competitive bid process. Located on the Cal Poly campus in San Luis Obispo, the building bridges academia and industry by providing leasable dry and wet laboratory space for research firms while fostering collaboration with Cal Poly students. Omni Design secured the contract through their schematic design services and provided full architectural, civil engineering, and construction administration throughout the project.
Key Features
Flexible Lab Design: The building was designed to accommodate a wide range of tenant needs, supporting both dry and wet laboratory configurations and diverse equipment requirements.
Sustainability Focus: As a LEED-certifiable building, the project incorporated resource, water, and energy conservation practices, along with sustainable site design including hydrology, hydraulic design, erosion control, and stormwater systems.
Regulatory Coordination: Omni Design managed coordination with the Division of State Architect (DSA), ADA compliance, and the Regional Water Quality Control Board to ensure full permitting and regulatory compliance.
Outcome
The Tech Park Pilot Building successfully established a model for industry-academic collaboration on the Central Coast, providing a flexible, sustainable facility where private research firms can operate alongside Cal Poly students. The project was completed with a final construction cost of $4.6 million and remains a key asset in the Cal Poly research and technology ecosystem.
