The Madonna Inn Expo Center in San Luis Obispo, California, hosted Beyond 2024, an AEC/O industry event dedicated to fostering innovation, collaboration, and sustainable growth. This forum brought together professionals dedicated to fostering innovation, collaboration, and sustainable growth, positioning itself as a catalyst for cutting-edge solutions that impact not only the Central Coast but all of California and beyond.

This October 15, 16 and 17, Omni Design and Cal y Mayor Group are attending Autodesk University 2024 in San Diego! The event is a hub for industry leaders to dive into the latest in Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) technologies.

We are excited to share our participation in the City of Santa Maria’s “Going Big by Going Small” Micro Transit Unveiling Event, held on September 19th, 2024. The event marked a major milestone as 15 new electric micro transit buses were unveiled, setting the City on a path to cleaner, more efficient public transportation. These electric vehicles (EVs) are designed to improve frequency, reduce emissions, and provide a more comfortable and modern transit experience for residents.

We are proud to have worked with Gridstor in the development of Goleta´s battery storage facility. This is the newest battery storage facility in California which is also now the largest power source in Santa Barbara County. 

We recently visited Cal Poly’s SLO campus, which hosts several buildings designed by Omni Design, Inc. One of the highlights of the visit was the award-winning Simpson Strong-Tie Material Demonstration Lab.

We are happy to share the progress of the new Fire Station No. 3, designed by Omni Design, Inc.

The Zoo Med project is located on a 9.1-acre site at the intersection of Winterhaven Way and Willow Road in Nipomo. It includes the phased construction of two 70,000-square-foot high-cube warehouses used for storage, re-packaging, and wholesale distribution of pet products and supplies.

The proposed structures are designed to fit in with the rural character of the surrounding properties by incorporating sloped roofs with overhangs, articulated facades, metal siding, and muted finishes for an agrarian style.  The standing seam roofs are white to minimize heat gain in the vicinity.

Site Improvements include new stormwater retention basins, bioswales, and other low-impact site design treatments. Additional site features include a landscape of native species, and permeable pavers for all the sidewalks and a portion of the parking lot as a measure to retain stormwater run-off, and to recharge the ground water.

The event was a great way to share with the community the incredible work our team of architects, engineers, and surveyors do to get great projects built for our clients.

The two VR (Virtual Reality) headsets we brought definitely caught the attention of the visitors, that got to know some of our projects as if they were walking through them.

3.1 GW of new battery storage was added to the U.S. energy grid in 2021, with the majority coming from California, according to a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Report.

Thus, this added capacity was 6.2 times the capacity added in 2020, showing a significant ramp-up in the deployment of this type of infrastructure.

California was the leader in this trend, adding 1.8GW of battery capacity in 2021, which accounted for more than half of the increase nationwide and growing capacity to 3% of the state’s energy capacity from just 0.7% in 2020. California has sought to incentivize the deployment of battery storage to meet increases in solar and wind production.

“Battery storage resources provide the flexibility needed to meet those ramping needs, as they can store energy during peak solar production hours – mainly during the afternoon – and then discharge that energy during the evening ramp period” – FERC Report.

We are very happy to announce that Omni Design, Inc. is joining Cal y Mayor Group. This is an important milestone in the company’s life that will bring great benefits to all of its stakeholders (clients, shareholders, employees, and business partners).

Moving forward with this strategic decision, the Omni Design team of David Marchell and Tom Reay will remain in their current roles as President and Vice-president, as will the rest of the team of professionals that make up Omni.

We are glad to say that not only will Omni keep its people, but it will add more professionals as part of the growth strategy that Omni and Cal y Mayor have put together. A refresh on Omni´s webpage and branding has also taken place as you can notice. We want to stress that joining the Cal y Mayor Group means that we will be able to perform bigger and more complex projects for our clients, with more tools and capabilities.

We intend to grow Omni´s current services and markets with increased capabilities in BIM methodology, which will translate in more value to our clients through more efficient and information-rich projects.

Understanding 24´´ x 36´´ plans is a task that may be daunting, inconvenient, a headache, or just impossible for the stakeholders that do not have a construction background. Here is how digital models will change how you interact with your project in the design process.

Digital models have been around for quite some time as part of architects’ and engineers’ design toolkit, but since there is no use for clients outside the construction industry to receive the digital models in complicated and unmanageable software that is needed to produce them, this has been greatly unnoticed. But what if clients instead received beautiful animated digital models that allow them to actually navigate them without any software requirement, and understand how their project will look and feel like in real life.

That would be a game-changer for them, and that is what we want to achieve with our clients. Taking it a step further, we can recreate these digital models into a Virtual Reality (“VR”) environment that allows people to increase the level of understanding of a project in the most intuitive way, by walking a project as they would in real life, with a real feeling of its dimensions, colors, layout, etc. VR environment is so immersive and with such a high resolution that after spending a couple of minutes you start to forget you are inside a VR headset!.

Located on Union Road, the project is a small fire station that will be converted into a training center in the next phase. The entire Ap Bay will be built in the first phase and in a second phase, a larger fire station will be built on the other side of Ap Bay and a large training area behind the buildings.

Omni Design, Inc.  provided Architectural Programming and Design Services to develop a Public Safety Master Plan on an 8.5 acre site to accommodate the City’s  new Fire Station No. 3, and public safety training center. The 6,700 SF Fire Station is currently under construction.

Future improvements will include a new Paso Robles Police substation and an evidence storage building.

Omni Design, Inc. assisted Upstream Energy Company in developing a site plan and presentation graphics approved the development plan and conditional use permit for a new 60-megawatt lithium ion energy storage facility. 

The Goleta Energy Storage facility will consist of 62 pre-manufactured energy storage “cabinets” called Megapacks. Each Megapack contains 17 Tesla battery modules. 

The project also will include construction of an underground tie-in and electrical infrastructure in order to connect to the existing Southern California Edison Isla Vista substation.
